14 - getting a remembrance tattoo

14. Tattoo

I contacted the guys over at The Tattoo Lounge and they were kind enough to show me around their establishment. The environment is so laid back and comfortable, you would swear it wasn't a tattoo parlour.

The idea was to get a tattoo in remembrance of my good friend that passed away due to cancer. I had the idea of just quoting a line from one of his favourite t-shirts: "Stay Humble" with a cancer ribbon somewhere in the mix. When I met Tristan we discussed the idea and what came out of it, is just as I imagined it to be. Thanks to Tristan and everyone at The Tattoo Lounge for being a part of my #30thingsbefore30 journey.

The Tattoo Lounge (Cape Town) is owned and created by Sam Artooist Cluer, co-founder and artist of the former Tattoo Muse in Muizenberg.

Number 10

I have always wanted to watch the Lego Movie with my kids and for #30thingsbefore30 it came in at number 10.

It taught me to stop being too controlling over my kids and start listening to them more and in doing so I learnt that,

"Everything is AWESOME!"

No more President Business mode for me.

Number 9

Number 9 in #30thingsbefore30 was all about getting to know some history regarding the beautiful city of Cape Town.

The city might be beautiful, the landmarks might be amazing and the people might be friendly but the city itself is tainted with a hurtful past. This was quite evident in experiences which was related by the tour guide, Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown was a former resident of District Six, he now volunteers for the District Six Museum, where he educates locals and tourists about the rich history which was District Six.

We could not have asked for a more beautiful winters day to embark on this tour. We took to the streets reliving what it was like growing up in the area through the Mr Brown's experiences. Not to delve to much on the negative past but what these people had to go through did bring a tear to my. I was astonished at the amount of open spaces left behind, sad to think people once lived there and today the space is used for car to park. Some residents have been relocated back to the area but there are still many waiting to come back.

Many thanks to Mr. Brown and the good people of the District Six Museum, for myself going to the museum for the first time I must say it really gave me a new perspective of what really went down all those years ago. If you want to experience it for yourself then get in touch with the museum and take a trip into the rich history which was and still is District Six.

District Six is the name of a former inner-city residential area in Cape Town, South Africa. Over 60,000 of its inhabitants were forcibly removed during the 1970s by the apartheid regime. The area of District Six is now partly divided between the suburbs of Walmer Estate, Zonnebloem, and Lower Vrede, while the rest is undeveloped land.

Number 8

Cool-Runnings is Africa's only toboggan track situated in Tygervalley, Cape Town, and it is the place to go to if you are looking for an adrenaline filled adventure. That's exactly what I did for my #30thingsbefore30 challenge.

The toboggans, sledges, or bob-sleds as they are also known, can take a maximum of two people.

It rests on four wheels that sit in a groove of the smooth steel half pipe. The track is a total of 1.25km long; 429 metres of uphill draglift and 821 metres of downhill toboggan track.

Cool Runnings - Awesome Family Fun!

The ride was exhilarating, and the more rides I embarked on, the less I took to the braking system. I wanted more speed to get around those corners and downhill stretches and all I could think about was the Jamaican Bobsled movie, "Cool Runnings," and the famous Doug E. Doug quote:

"Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme!
Get on up, its bobsled time!
COOL RUNNINGS!"

I would recommend this to anyone looking for some good fun and if you have not yet been, I suggest you go. The staff and management are a really cool bunch of people and big thanks must go to these two for allowing me the opportunity give Cool Runnings a try.

With South Africa's big 3 sporting codes already been checked out, I thought which lesser known sport in the country have I not yet had the privilege of seeing live and immediately Hockey came to mind. Growing up in Cape Town, I have always heard about Hartleyvale Hockey Stadium but never actually gave it any attention and this time round for my #30thingsbefore30 challenge, I decided to finally go and grace it with my presence.

For the record, I have never been arrested, so when I asked a cop if I could check out the back of a police van, he politely obliged. So here are some pics of my first time at the back of a South African Police Service van. And here's to hoping I never have to enter one again!

Number 5

On the day when South African's were celebrating Women's Day, I decided to celebrate by going to my very first LoveAll event and in doing so tick another thing off my #30thingsbefore30 bucket list.

The venue and the line up of DJ's were well put together and I even had a chance to join in the festivities by trying my hand at "Party Tennis". The aim of the game was to serve the ball into the hole to win a shot from a selection of shooters. I was given 3 tennis balls and as fate would have I would go on and get my final ball through the hole and the prize was mine!!!

So the older I become the younger the crowd seems to become but heck that doesn't seem to phase me much, as I am still young at heart and attending these types of events is all for the LOVE of music, and I will continue to be on the scene even though I am "ALMOST" 30.

Big up to the event organizers for an awesome party and thanks to Bryan Travis for rescuing my wife and I from the blistering cold.

"Do 30 things before I'm 30," I said, well I never thought I would be handling a chainsaw, EVER!

But that was not the case and I handled that shit like a PRO!
